DR ALAN CODAY IHBC
Associate Heritage Consultant
Alan Coday is a Heritage Conservation Consultant and has been involved in the appraisal and adaptive reuse of designated heritage assets since 1988. Formerly at the Ove Arup Partnership then as a Consultant Conservation Officer at Maldon District Council he was a Director of the Association of Building Preservation Trusts (UKAPT) where he was Chair of the East Anglia region. A qualified Building Surveyor with 22 years University leadership of building conservation courses at BSc, MSc and PhD levels, he became Associate Professor and now holds Emeritus status.
His academic experience has built expertise in the science of traditional materials, adaptive reuse of heritage buildings and appropriate use of conservation philosophy to inform and direct conservation, restoration and preservation schemes strictly where appropriate.
Experience includes leadership of Building Preservation Trust projects, sourcing and securing funding for community-led schemes, and technical appraisal of development schemes for corporate, consultant, private and public clients.
Conservation led regeneration, particularly where grass-roots schemes promote community involvement, can be the key to long term sustainable use of obsolescent buildings: but this can only be realised if the key stakeholders understand how opportunities can overcome threats and risks. As a technically-minded, approachable but very strong communicator, Alan has led heritage conservation projects throughout East Anglia.
